Dear Reader,

The initiative was started in 2012 by the Global Wellness Day Organization in Istanbul Turkey under the leadership of Belgin Aksoy. In 2016, Global Wellness Institute, awarded Aksoy with the Leading Woman in Wellness award, which is the most prestigious award in the wellness-spa industry reaching up to an economic growth of 4.5 trillion dollars.

Growing from one celebration in Turkey, this social project is now endorsed in 180 countries through appointed ambassadors collectively impacting millions of people across the world. The strong philosophy of living well has crossed borders and given the project a universal identity, “One day, can change your whole life!” The events held within the scope of Global Wellness Day are free of charge and open to the public.

Following my appointment in 2019 as the first GWD Ambassador for Kenya, we brought together 400 people at Trademark Hotel in Village Market. Due to the pandemic, we had to create online events in 2020 and 2021. This year GWD will take place on June 11th 2022 at Nairobi Street Kitchen with a complementary programme merging mental health assessments, fitness, meditation, comedy, and entertainment.

The celebration is anchored on the theme #ThinkMagenta, a call to invite society to add color to their thoughts by developing a positive mindset. In a press statement released by GWD, the founder stated, “On June 11th this year, GWD will incorporate the theme by inviting people to #ThinkMagenta, recommending simple but effective affirmations, reminding people that living well begins in the mind. When you know where to look, there is a good side to even the toughest days. We want to spread the #ThinkMagenta philosophy within communities and beyond.”

As a wellness movement that has brought the world together in an inspiring mission, GWD continues to strengthen its influence with the support of mega-celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Richard Branson, Dj Khaled and many other A-list authors, world-renowned athletes, musicians, business executives, entrepreneurs, private companies, multi- national hotel corporations and governments. Tizi Talks joins this family to curate the event in partnership with Nairobi Street Kitchen, Breathe Media, Pink Lady Apples, AfroFit, Mayers Spring Water, The Wellbeing Nook, Prometheus Consultancy, and Mental 360.

Considering the guiding theme, we have prepared a ‘Think Magenta Programme’ which is made of up of fun activities that will positively impact your mind, body and spirit. For your mind, Mental 360 and Prometheus Consultancy will run free mental health assessments and screenings. These will be taking place throughout the day so that everyone gets a chance to speak with a certified mental health practitioner.

Mike Wachira will be the Emcee for the event; he is a key public figure who has openly talked about his mental health journey. He is an experienced broadcaster with over 13 years experience in radio and TV, DJ, human rights lawyer, content creator, ancient alien theorist and an ADHD super hero.

For your body AfroFit will be hosting an Afro-beat themed class with dance and flow guided by one of their top trainers. The one-hour fitness class will be merging play and mindfulness. We’ll get to have a great time as we warm up for the day, enjoy good music, and stretch together.

For the first time, we are incorporating a spiritual practice in the programme to demonstrate that having a routine which builds and strengthens your spirit is a key part to maintaining a positive state of mind. There will be a group guided meditation session called ‘Mindfulness and Happiness- A Mindset Shift’ which will be facilitated by the incredible Shalini- Bhalla Lucas.

She is an internationally accredited mindfulness and mindset coach, passionate about raising mental health awareness through her retreats and mindfulness workshops, and in the corporate world. She is the best selling author of three books, a TEDx Speaker, TV and radio presenter, Capital FM podcatser and an award winning entreprenerur of her wellbeing company Just Jhoom!

In this insightful and engaging interactive session, Shalini will share her thoughts and techniques on how she has adopted mindfulness to decrease stress, depression, anxiety and cultivate happiness, compassion, and resilience into her busy, daily life – and show us how we can do the same.

For your entire wellbeing, there will be a ‘Think Magenta’ panel with three experts on psychiatry, psychology, fitness, and nutrition which I will be moderating. This interactive discussion will be anchored on how we can improve our physical and internal health to build mental immunity while maintaining a positive state of mind. The speakers are Dr. Caroline Vundi, a Psychiatrist & Host of the Self-Work Podcast; Aldo Oluoch-Olunya, a Counselling Psychologist; and Rhotimi Peter, a Certified Fitness Coach & Nutritionist.

For entertainment, there will be stand-up comedy and trivia group games hosted by Yafesi Musoke, an extremely talented artist, TV host and creative. Finding humour through adversity and during a period where Kenya is in an election year will be a fantastic way of concluding the event while seeking to reduce the underlying anxiety building up among Kenyans.

With a special programme dedicated to strengthening our wellbeing, my hope is that everyone who takes part in the event will have a pleasant and positive experience. We’ll dance, meditate, paint, talk, laugh, make new friends and have a great time. Make sure to come dressed in your sporty wear and bring a friend. Entrance is completely free. We look forward to hosting you all.
